AOL においてアームストロングは組織内部の問題をまず解決し、
計画性あるリスクテイクを行うべきである。
スタートアップ企業がイノベーティブであり得る一つの要因としては、
「何も失うものはない」からであり、実際にそう振舞うことができるからである。
大きな組織は保守的になる傾向にあり、安全な道を選ぶようになる。
『AOL はサカリのついた若いスタートアップ企業のように振舞うべきであり、
恋人に振られてしょぼくれた老人のようになっている時ではない』
Once Armstrong figures out the internal organizational issues, he needs to push AOL to take big calculated risks. One of the reasons that startups generate so much innovation is because they act like they have nothing to lose. So they go for it.
Bigger established companies can become protective, so they tend to play it safe. AOL needs to act like a horny young startup, not an old jilted lover.

インターネットのサービスが得る注目は山の天気ほど変わりやすい。
明日には新しいサービスが Facebook を追いかけて、追いぬいて行くかも
しれない。はたまた MySpace が挽回するのかもしれない。
先行サービスを追いかける立場の人たちは、先進的、革命的であり、
ユーザの目を惹く施策を打ちながら、先駆者の背中を見ながらがむしゃらに
走れば良い。ところが、先頭を走る者を抜き去ったその後に、
それでもまだ先進的であり、革命的であり続ける事が難しいように思う。
そこには、先駆者との距離を意識したがむしゃらさの欠落であったり、
組織の規模の拡大に応じたスピードダウンであったり、先頭を守る事に
意識が行くあまり、かつて革新的だった組織が保守的な組織へと
誰も気づかぬまま変革していってしまう事が考えられる。
この抜きつ抜かれつが激しく繰り返されるからこそ、インターネット業界全体が
活性化していると考えると、それはそれで、若い体が代謝が良いように、
健全なメタボリズムなのかもしれない。
Google, Facebook, Twitter にはいつまでも若々しくいて欲しいものだが、
果たして。
